As a kindergarten teacher, I understand how challenging it can be for both children and parents when facing separation anxiety. It's a common hurdle as children begin their school journey, but with patience and support, it can be overcome.

Here are some tips to help your child through this phase:

  1. Establish a Routine: Consistency is key. Create a morning routine that includes special rituals or activities before leaving for school. This can help your child feel more secure and prepared for the day ahead.

  2. Talk About Feelings: Encourage open communication about how your child is feeling. Validate their emotions and reassure them that feeling nervous or scared is okay. Let them know that you understand and support them.

  3. Practice Separation: Gradually introduce short periods of separation before the first day of school. Start by leaving them with a trusted caregiver or family member for brief periods, then gradually increase the time apart.

  4. Stay Positive: Show enthusiasm about the school experience. Talk about the fun activities they will do, the friends they will make, and the new things they will learn. Positivity can be contagious and reassuring for your child.

  5. Create a Comfort Object: Give your child a comforting object, such as a special toy or a family photo, to bring to school. A familiar item can provide comfort and security during the day.

  6. Stay Connected: Establish a communication plan with the teacher so you can stay updated on your child's progress throughout the day. Knowing you're just a phone call away can reassure you and your child.

  7. Celebrate Small Victories: Acknowledge and celebrate each small step of progress your child makes. Whether it's saying goodbye without tears or making a new friend, recognize and praise their efforts.

Remember, helping your child overcome separation anxiety is a gradual process that requires patience and understanding. By providing consistent support and reassurance, you can help your child feel more confident and comfortable as they navigate the exciting world of kindergarten.

Try reading "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn with your students! It is a great book that reminds students that Mom, Dad, or Grandma (whoever is at home waiting for them) will be "with" them during the day!
