What is the 'Summer Slide?'

In the most basic of explanations, Summer Slide is the loss of learning that occurs over the summer months when children are not in school.

What can parents do to prevent or minimize this?

Engage your child in some form of learning stimulation each day (such as the After the Bells summer packet).

But why shouldn't I just let my kid relax and enjoy summer?

You most certainly can! It only takes a few minutes daily, preferably in the morning when the brain is ripe and ready to work!

Still don't believe us?

Here are five clear reasons why parents should ensure that young learners engage in brain-stimulating activities over the summer months:

1.        Preventing Academic Regression

Reason: Summer learning helps prevent the "summer slide," where children can lose up to two months of reading and math skills during the break.

Benefit: Children maintain their academic progress during the school year, reducing the need for review and catch-up in the fall.

2.        Closing the Achievement Gap

Reason: Engaging in educational activities over the summer can help bridge the gap between students from different socio-economic backgrounds.

Benefit: All children, regardless of background, have equal opportunities to learn and succeed, narrowing the achievement gap.

3.        Enhancing Social and Emotional Development

Reason: Summer programs often include group activities that promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

Benefit: Children develop critical social and emotional skills that are essential for their overall growth and success in life.

4.        Cultivating a Love for Learning

Reason: Summer learning can be more flexible and interest-driven, incorporating fun and engaging activities that spark curiosity.

Benefit: Children develop a positive attitude towards learning, which can motivate them to continue seeking knowledge and exploring new interests.

5.        Maintaining Routine and Structure

Reason: A consistent routine that includes educational activities can provide stability and structure for children during the summer.

Benefit: Children benefit from a balanced schedule that includes time for learning, play, and rest, leading to better overall well-being and readiness for the upcoming school year.
